The scene begins with the stage in darkness. Mary is seated on a stool, stage right, doing some sewing.  The Angel Gabriel is standing on an elevated stage block, stage left, with his arms outstretched and palms open. Bright lights are focused on Gabriel and as soon as they are switched on Mary lets out a high pitched scream and drops her sewing.

Mary - (panic stricken) Ah, ah, what’s happening? Who are you?  What do you want?

Angel Gabriel - (calmly with authority) I am the Angel Gabriel and I am God’s messenger. Please do not be afraid.

Mary - (standing) But what are you doing here in my house?

Angel Gabriel - I have come to tell you that you are favoured above all other women. You will become pregnant and give birth to a son who you will call Jesus. He will be great and known as the ‘Son of the Most High'. He will reign over the House of Jacob throughout the ages and there will be no end to His reign.

Mary - I don’t understand. How can this be? I have not been intimate with any man as a husband.

Angel Gabriel - The Holy Spirit will come upon you and overshadow you like a shining cloud and your offspring shall be called the Son of God.

Mary moves centre stage and closer to the Angel Gabriel, facing him as she sings the song.

SONG - WHY ME? – Mary’s Song

Mary -

I am so confused by your revelation
Don’t know if I’ll get through this situation
It‘s so much to do for an ordinary girl
Why did God have to gaze in my direction?
He must know my ways and imperfections
I feel in such a daze as I face my new world

Why me; why me, of all the girls he could choose?
Why me; why me, of all the girls he could use?

Why did God show me such grace and favour?
Will my life now be in any danger?
How will Joseph see me when the Spirit comes?
Will my family start to reject me?
Will people in the street stop to correct me?
God must give me peace so His will can be done

Why me; why me, of all the girls he could choose?
Why me; why me, of all the girls he could use?

What do I tell my friends; will they believe me?
Will they comprehend and see what I see?
Will they come by again or leave me out on my own?
God’s power will descend He’ll be beside me
As I round every bend His hand will guide me
His Spirit He will send so I won’t be all alone

Why me; why me, of all the girls he could choose?
Why me; why me, of all the girls he could use?

Mary faces the audience and speaks slowly and confidently.

I am the handmaiden of the Lord so let it be done to me.
